PARISH COUNCIL
Parish pastoral council is a group of people who help guide a parish's life and mission. The council's members are chosen from the parish community, including the pastor, staff, and lay people. The council's goal is to help the parish carry out the mission of Jesus Christ.
Responsibilities
- Develop plans: The council creates and suggests plans for the parish's pastoral care.
- Promote Christian formation: The council helps people grow in their Christian faith.
- Make decisions: The council evaluates information and makes decisions that reflect the Church's teachings and the Gospel's values.
- Foster a sense of mission: The council helps the parish focus on its mission, rather than on finances or programs.
Membership
- The council should reflect the diversity of the parish.
- The council should include the pastor and their vicars, parish staff, and lay people.
Meeting practices
- Some councils meet regularly, either once a day or over a weekend.
- Some councils have staggered terms so that new members are regularly brought in.
